Captain's Blog; January 26, in the year Two Thousand and Nine. Our first day in Key West.
LaGrange and I stand before Southernmost House, poised to enter, when the Selkie says, "Wait, Captain, the manor is but a facade. That which thou seeketh is contained in the pirate's hideaway house across the lane. All your alchemical potions and quills and symbols and charts and books and music that you require are contained therein."
I start to interrupt her when she says, "Hush. Listen." We hear the murmurings in the balmy breeze, a strange song from a young girl. I says, "Where she be?"
The Selkie replies, "Captain, you must sing her into being. Alma is only on the breath now. You must translate that soul essence onto the parchment in order to sing her into existence."
I says, "The only singing I know be the song of the sirens, and that brings men to their certain doom."
The seal woman answers, "That is true, my dear Captain, but women, sisters, and pirate queens have nothing to fear. They know the words and they sing along. Just as you will know the words as you join the chorus. Welcome to the Pirate's Hideaway House. I shall leave you now to make your preparations and mix your alchemical potions. You already know what you need to know. I must put on my soul skin and return to the ocean; I go where I long."
And after a wistful glance with her soulful brown eyes, as if sad to take her leave, she bids "Fare thee well"... and slips into the sea.
